ImnP (I am not Plastics) Initiatives, started by Khushi Kabra, focus on driving awareness, advocacy and adoption of better alternatives to plastics. Despite increasing awareness about plastic pollution and its harm to our environment, global demand for plastic continues. The sustainable approach to drive impact is to create awareness about environment friendly alternatives – Compostable Plastics. The initiative aims to break myths about compostable plastics and degradable plastics. ImnP initiative is an awareness campaign which helps us fight plastic pollution to enable sustainable living for us and future generations. Its high time that we rethink about plastics.
Plastic and White Pollution
Most Plastics developed are made from polypropylene (synthesized from non-renewable fossil fuels- natural gas and petroleum) and generate greenhouse gases in process. Various chemical additives added to give plastic products, their desirable performance properties, can have adverse effects on humans – Bisphenol-A and Phthalates cause various types of cancer, impaired immune functions and various birth defects. Plastic doesn’t disintegrate and virtually every piece of plastic that has been made still exists in some shape or form resulting in White Pollution and causing irreversible damage to our environment
Harms widlife and marine life
Poison food chain
Cause Pollution & Potential health risks
Take hundreds of years to disintegrate.
Block drainage causing flood.
Cause death to wild animals.
Impact biodiversity resulting in biological imbalance.
Causes groundwater pollution.
Rethinking Plastic – Compostable Plastics
With plastic ban across multiple countries and most states in India, compostable plastics is right alternative to reduce plastic pollution. Unlike common plastics, compostable plastics undergo biological decomposition to yield CO2, water, inorganic compounds and biomass at a rate consistent with other compostable materials and leaves no visible, distinguishable or toxic residue. Because compostable plastics are made of cellulose, there are no toxic gases being released into the air and into food chain. Time to switch to compostable bags to reduce plastic pollution !
